Many of you today will have received chocolates, flowers, underwear, possibly an engagement ring and many other things that you happen to love. Many others won’t have received anything as they don’t conform to the annual romantic celebrations and others will still be waiting on that special someone to celebrate next year.
But do you really know why this romantic day actually exists?
The truth is, is that nobody actually knows the exact story of how it came about although it is thought to be about the tragic fate of St.Valentine who was said to have been killed around 269 C.E. for marrying couples in Rome when it wasn’t allowed.
Due to the romantic connection of why he was killed, this led to be him becoming the patron saint of love. It was actually centuries later when the 14th of February became Valentine’s Day and an extremely long time until it became the commercialism event that we see today leading to us handing each other among other things cards, roses and chocolates.
But … then there was apparently another man called Valentine too (just to confuse things a little) and he was killed too! There are also the stories about it being a Roman Pagan festival that Christians condemned.
So, as you can see – it’s all a little confusing isn’t it and I’m struggling to understand why we would celebrate it if it’s to do with men being killed! Hmm, so my take on it is this …
If you love someone, whether it be your boyfriend, wife, children then tell them every day … not just when the adverts tell you too. 💕
